Camarillo, California – As the City prepares for the North Pleasant Valley Groundwater Desalter to go online at the end of 2021, Camarillo’s Water Division is proactively flushing water mains to prepare water service to City of Camarillo water customers. Flushing is part of routine maintenance that is typically conducted by water purveyors on a regular basis to ensure water quality standards are attained at all times.

Beginning Tuesday, July 27 through Thursday, September 30, City of Camarillo Water Division crews will flush water mains as required by the California Department of Drinking Water Regulations. The work is scheduled for 3 days each week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), between the nighttime hours of 8:30 pm and 5:00 am.

“You may notice City Water Division crews working at night, using fire hydrants and releasing water into the street,” explained Deputy Director of Public Works Lucie McGovern. “This is referred to as ‘flushing.’ Although it may appear that the City is wasting water during a time when everyone is supposed to be conserving water, the flushing activities are actually a very important routine maintenance task which is necessary to sustain high water quality and the reliability of our water system.”

Occasionally during the flushing activities, customers in the vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of the water. This occurs from minerals such as iron, that are being removed by the flushing the water pipelines.  It does not affect the safety of the water.  Following a flushing in your neighborhood, check your water for discoloration by running the faucets in your home with cold water for a minute or two. This will help clear your lines. It is recommended that you collect the water in buckets and irrigate your lawn or plants. It is also recommended that you wait to do laundry until the water is clear to avoid staining.

Please note that this flushing activity only applies to public hydrants that serve City of Camarillo Water customers. Flushing activity does not involve any private hydrants and does not apply to customers of Camrosa Water District, Crestview Mutual, Pleasant Valley Mutual or Cal-American Water Company.
