RADON IN YOUR HOME?
Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless, radioactive gas which leaks from
ground and rock formations which have significant uranium content. It seeps into a structure through dirt floors, drains, sumps, joints, pores in block walls, and cracks in foundations. Although it usually enters a house through basements and lower floors, the gas circulates through the entire structure. Radon is dangerous because exposure of the lungs to the small amounts of radiation in radon may create, over many years, an increased risk of lung cancer.
The County of Ventura is one of two California counties classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as an area of potentially high risk for radon. For that reason, the county's division of Environmental Health encourages residents to have their homes tested for radon. For information on home radon testing, pamphlets and health risks, call the Environmental Health Division weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM at 654-2813.
