One of the areas of highest earthquake risk in the United States is along the San Andreas
fault, an area stretching from Northern to Southern California. The San Andreas fault is very active, averaging more than 250 minor events each year. To increase your personal safety in case of an earthquake, bolt to walls anything that might topple such as top-heavy shelves, bookcases, appliances, and other furniture.

Don't hang heavy objects over the bed. Strap the hot water heater to the wall studs with a chain or metal tape. Locate master switches and shut-off valves for utilities and know how to turn them off if it becomes necessary.
Keep tools handy. Keep on hand one or more flashlights, portable radios,
plenty of fresh batteries for each, a First Aid kit; an all purpose fire extinguisher; at least seven gallons of fresh water per person; and non perishable ready-to-eat foods. Alkaline batteries last longer than standard batteries and any unused battery lasts longer if it is kept in a refrigerator or freezer. Since there is no warning and often no time to move to protected areas, you will have to deal with the earthquake the instant it strikes. Stay put and try to remain calm. If indoors, crouch under a desk or a heavy table.
Remember that everything will be shaking and the table you are under may walk across the floor. If so, be ready to move with it. Bracing yourself in a doorway can help if there is nothing to get under. Stay away from windows, brick masonry (like fireplaces), bookcases, china cabinets and mirrors. If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings, trees and power lines. If driving, move away from overpasses, drive slowly to a non traffic area and stay in your vehicle. Listen to the radio. In a multiple story building stay inside, get under a desk or table and stay away from outside walls and windows. Do not use the elevator.
