EMERGENCY SHELTERS

In the event of an emergency that requires the evacuation of certain portions of Camarillo, local advisories on radio and television will instruct you to evacuate your home and proceed to an emergency shelter.

Your fist choice for a shelter should actually be the home of a relative or friend. This is, however, only if you are sure that the home of a particular relative or friend is out of the established evacuation zone, and that you are able to safely get to that location without interfering with emergency response efforts.

If you are unable to get to the home of a relative or friend, local officials will open short-term and possibly long-term shelters. The shelters identified by the American Red Cross in Camarillo consist of the elementary and middle schools in the Pleasant Valley School District, as well as Camarillo High School and Frontier Continuation High School, which is located at the Camarillo Airport.

These shelters will be operated under Red Cross guidelines. Bedding and food provisions cannot be guaranteed in the short-term shelters, and shelters do have inconveniences. Please note the following shelter requirements:

  • Pets are not allowed inside public shelters, although some shelters may have areas inside fenced-in school playgrounds, tennis courts, etc. to place pets temporarily.
  • The Police Department will visit shelters, and noisy or other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • If possible, try to eat something before coming to a shelter, and bring water and additional food from home.
  • Also bring sleeping bags, blankets, a supply of needed medications, a change of clothing, toiletries, personal items and personal identification.
  • It is also a good idea to bring games, books and other items to pass the time.

Listen for local radio and television announcements regarding shelter openings and times. Do not go to a shelter until it has been opened. The specific incident and potential threat to public safety will determine which shelters will be opened. As long as there is electrical power available, the City’s cable television channel 10 will continuously scroll information about shelters.

All home emergency preparedness kits should include a portable radio and extra batteries in the event of power outages during an emergency. For more information on City emergency response and preparedness, please contact City Hall at 388-5349.
