Sanitary Plant Tour - 3. Primary Treatment

  Primary Clarifier

"Primary treatment" refers to the physical removal of solids from the wastewater by gravity. After preliminary treatment, the wastewater is introduced into a sedimentation tank or clarifier and the solids are allowed to settle to the bottom. Since this is the first phase of clarification the tank is often called a "primary clarifier." The CSD has five primary clarifiers. The settled solids are called biosolids (sludge). The biosolids are pumped to an anaerobic (without oxygen) digester for treatment while the remaining wastewater is transferred to the second phase of treatment.
